shag

defecate: He went into the bushes to have a shag.

Contributor's comments: Never heard this use for term "shag" in my 51 years in SA. I thought it was something else done in the bushes (with someone of the opposite sex). Not especially an Australian term, I consider it to be English slang.

Contributor's comments: You must be joking!

Contributor's comments: Sorry, but I have only heard "shag" used to mean sexual activity, ie. "They went into the bushes to have a shag", "I shagged him/her".

Editor's comments: Believe it or not, but "shag" in its sexual meaning dates way back to the 1700s! It is venerable slang, and still widely used in British slang, US slang, and Australian and NZ slang. The defecation meaning, on the otherhand, is totally unknown. Can anyone else corroborate this meaning?

Contributor's comments: Shag in Nth Qld has always from my experience referred to sexual activity. eg. I've been shagging - she's a good shag - we're always shagging. Being 'shagged' is also a term meaning "I'm exhausted" without sexual connotations.
