cobra

A cobra is the fruit of a cucurbit also known as an Indian Cream. They are very popular in the area north and west of Gympie - the Munna Creek area. They are like a long, white rockmelon, and smell the same, but they are not at all sweet. They are prepared by slicing open, peeling, slicing up, then standing overnight with sugar sprinkled on it. This create a syrup, which makes the melon sweet, and then this is topped with cream. The locals keep the seeds and hand them on to each other. Everyone aims to have cobras for Christmas Day. The best cobra is mealie, so that when it is prepared, it carries the flavour most fully: I've got some beaut cobras for the market tomorrow.
