Dirty Acre

A 3/4 acre block in the middle of the Golden Mile near Kalgoorlie. It was sold for 12 bottles of champagne in the 1890s by Tom Brookman and Sam Pearce (the discoverers of the Golden Mile). The small block was quickly covered with 5 hotels, a brewery and numerous other shops. Miners used to tunnel up into the cellars of the hotels to sell stolen gold over the bar. The 'Sunday Sesh' at the Block was a riotous affair right up to the early 1990s when the last hotel was demolished to make way for mining operations: A drought slaker at the Dirty Acre.
