Contributor's comments: I first heard of Polony not being the national name of processed luncheon meat on a camping tour of Australia in 1978. In SA we ordered luncheon meat, Vic. it was Devon, NSW & Qld, I don't remember but we had always assumed everyone used the same words everywhere. This is a great project.
Contributor's comments: Polony is definitely used in WA as a term for manufactured or processed meat that comes in "knobs". Since moving to NSW 2.5 months ago, our children have been feeling slightly confused about the polony in the fridge that has the word "devon" on the outside.
Contributor's comments: I grew up in Queensland and have lived in most other states. What we called 'Windsor' sausage as kids in Cairns I later discovered is called 'Devon' in NSW, 'Fritz' in SA and 'Polony' in WA. In Darwin, all four are found in shops depending on where it is manufactured. This is great for the people of Darwin, most of whom come form other states. However, they will all eventually come to realise, as I did, that all these sausages are exactly the same product!
Contributor's comments: Polony was the name given by some of my German Uncles & Aunts in the Wimmera/Mallee area of Vic, but in Bendigo it was always luncheon.
