Contributor's comments: I had heard that a "mugwump" was the name of the machine that put the spindle hole in vinyl records.
Contributor's comments: Was used extensively by a teacher I had in Melbourne in the late 50s - as a term of 'mild' abuse about the stupidity of class members. 'You mugwumps just don't listen, do you?" etc.
