maisonette

noun a semi-detached house. Also, maisonnette. [French maisonnette, diminutive of maison house]

Contributor's comments: In Sydney real estate parlance, a semi is one of a single storey attached pair of houses, a maisonette is a two-storey semi, and a duplex is a two storey building comprising ground and first floor flats.

Contributor's comments: [Newcastle informant] a duplex townhouse: "Fred and Judy have just moved into their new maisonette".

Contributor's comments: [Melbourne informant] It's a fairly common term for a 1930's semi detached house round this area.

Contributor's comments: I'm open to correction on this one, but I believe that during our stay in North Queensland in 1968, semi-detached houses (usually only two together) were called maisonettes.
