Device used for hanging wet clothes on for the purpose of drying. I frequently encountered this use while living in Melbourne for 9 years, but have not heard it in Sydney, where Clothesline is the normal term: I hung my clothes on the washing line.
Contributor's comments: I grew up near Taree, NSW where we always referred to the hills hoist as the "washing line" (1960-1980)
