dimmie

Abbreviation for "dim sim", an Australianised version of a chinese food - minced meat and cabbage (?) in a thin dough casing: Two dimmies please, and can I have some black sauce?

Contributor's comments: You imply without being explicit that "dim sim" is an Australianised version of the Cantonese "dim sum". This is not correct. Melbourne is unusual in that, like Chicago, its Chinese community was traditionally not Cantonese speaking. It spoke the very aberrant "Sze Yap" dialect of the cities of Taishan, Xinhui and Jiangmen to the south-east of Canton. In Taishan dialect, dim sum is pronounced dim syim which in Melbourne became dim sim. Don't fall into this common trap.
