dingbat

an idiot: What did you do that for, you dingbat?

Contributor's comments: Heard it quite a bit in Sydney and Melbourne. Example: "He's a bit of a dingbat."

Contributor's comments: dingbat (or more commonly ding) is very common in reference to a male (never heard it used for a woman) of Yugoslav (and often Italian men also). It is not a term of abuse and Ted Bull on the ABC has used it recently when joking with his Yugoslav guest, Andy Grljusich.

Contributor's comments: I had always thought this to be an Americanism. I recall Archie Bunker in the US sitcom "All in the Family" used to call his wife a dingbat (cf Alf Garnet's "silly old moo"). I seem to remember about the same time there was a toy called a dingbat - it was an orange paddle/bat to which a rubber ball was attached with elastic.

Contributor's comments: Also widely used in Melbourne. It's in the American Heritage Dictionary according to www.dictionary.com so is probably used in America. Also there's that typefont caled Zaphod Dingbats.
