shimmy shirt

cotton singlet usually worn by girls prior to bra: Remember to put on your Shimmy to keep your chest warm. Also, shimmy.

Contributor's comments: My mum definitely referred to a singlet as a shimmy shirt. It is one of those cute things I remember about childhood that for no particular reason makes me want to cry. However, as a boy, I hope I wasn't wearing a training bra.

Contributor's comments: My English great gran used this expression - she was born in 1870. It derives from the French chemise. A Victorian or Edwardianism.

Contributor's comments: My mother used to say this poem to us: Little cupid fat and small, Ain't you got no shirt at all, Ain't you got no little skirt, Ain't you got no shimmy shirt, Little cupid fat and small, Ain't you cold.
