ramp

used instead of "grid" for the stock barrier that is imbedded into roads where they pass through a fence: To get to our place you turn west at ... pub, go over 7 ramps and look for a white mail box under a brigalow tree. Compare cattle grate, cattle grid, cattle ramp, grid2.

Contributor's comments: Ian was a student at Longreach Pastoral College in 1973 and the Queensland students often remarked when Ian referred to ramps that "bloody Southerners" (from NSW) only call grids ramps.

Contributor's comments: cattle-grid, steel bars across a gateway, as part of a vehicle-negotiable but stock-repellant roadway: "I've tied Bluey up down at the ramp, to keep those damned Texels in."
