meat wagon

an ambulance (this was from northern Victoria in the 1960s): The bulls came to the prang in the bull wagon and the ambos took him away in the meat wagon.

Contributor's comments: I have heard this term to describe a van which follows behind a bicycle race. The meat wagon picks up riders who have not been able to keep up with the pace of the race, or who have had mechanical failures. "I got picked up by the meat wagon".

Contributor's comments: Common term for an ambulance in rural NSW.
