gidgie

spear like tool for catching octopus: I used my gidgie to spear this octopus. [from the Aboriginal language Nyungar (south-western WA)]

Editor's comments: This is also spelt "gidgee".

Contributor's comments: [Perth informant] I was brought up near the beach and we used 'Gidgies' as spears to get fish, etc. We also would make very dangerous looking 'Gidgies' and chase each other around the back yard until Mum saw us and went ballistic.

Contributor's comments: [Perth informant] A gidgee was a short spear attached to a jelly rubber loop. You held the end of the loop, pulled the spear back and gripped it (all with one hand) so that you had tension, then you let it go to fire the gidge.
