cowboy

A country musician, usually bad: There's a bunch of cowboys playing at the pub.

Contributor's comments: The word cowboy is also used to describe somebody who is not good at their job, usually unreliable types, actually saw an ad in the West about a month back for a carpenter with the rider "no cowboys".

Contributor's comments: This term is used in a derogatory sense in the world of work to describe someone who cuts corners, ignores proper procedures and takes unacceptable risks to get a job done. It might be applied to the 'rouge traders' in the recent NAB trading losses, for example.
