can-opener

a type of `bomb' dive. Jumping into water with one leg tucked under arms into the chest, the other extended straight out. Note: a full `bomb' requires both legs to be tucked: Bernie always goes the can-opener off the rock at Pine Island. Compare banana, horsey, peg leg.

Contributor's comments: [Perth informant] We call it a 'horsey'.

Contributor's comments: This is not Australian in origin. I remember using this term (which is very common) as a small child in California 40 years ago. Somehow I think that it is more likely that the term would come from the US to Australia rather then the other way around - especially considering the respective size of the populations at the time I first remember hearing it.

Contributor's comments: On the mid north coast of NSW a can opener is called a peg leg.

Contributor's comments: We always used to call that a 'banana' at the Greensborough Swimming Pool in the 1960's.
