When I first moved to Canberra, I suppose I was a bit naive but was quite confused about "the House". People at work say they had been to "the House". Fairly soon I realised that they meant Parliament House. This is very much a public service thing. After all I suppose "the House" is what everything revolves around: I'm going up to the house for a meeting.
Contributor's comments: As a Canberran of 30+ years I have never heard parliament house referred to as 'the House', but I have fairly regularly heard new parliament house refered to as "The house on the hill"
