Neenish tart


Neenish tart - a tart case with a small amount of dark berry type jam in the bottom, then filled with imitation/mock cream, then topped with thick icing, half/half colours, either pink/white or chocolate/pink. Used to be a cake shop item, but now available in supermarkets. Not known in SA though, don't know about other states (I think they are horrible, my husband loves them!!)

Contributor's comments: Nenish Tarts have been known in New Zealand since at least the 1930s. They are a short pastry case with a creamy lemon filling, with a separate icing one half lemon, the other half chocolate. In recent years some have substituted an almond cakey filling for the lemon.

Contributor's comments: I thought it was spelled "Neanish" and was British in origin. They have been in traditional cake shops as long as I can remember. But the tops were chocolate and white.
