crowl

a stupid person (as an insult, used in West Ryde primary school in the 70s; named after Crowl Home, a centre for the care of cerebral palsy sufferers): Shut up, you big crowl! Compare minda, Moonya.

Contributor's comments: A person whose movements are awkward or clumsy. As self deprecating humour after doing something clumsy, "Don't call me a crowl". As an insult "Crowl", "stupid crowl". This word was current in Ryde in the 1960s, because of the presence of the local "Crowl Home" for spastic children. I became aware of it when a school friend from South Australia didn't know it. In SA they had "Mindo Homes" and hence their term was "Mindo".
