particular casual shoe worn (I think!) during 60s Surfie craze. (I'm amazed this hasn't surfaced before!): I have to buy board shorts and sneakers for the hols.

Contributor's comments: running/jogging shoes: "The school sports uniform is a royal blue tracksuit and white sneakers."

Contributor's comments: "Sneakers" is an Americanism!!!!!!!!!!

Contributor's comments: Sneakers as an Australian regionalism? I hardly think so. I recall from the early 60s a song about "high-heel sneakers" from one of those ubiquitous US girls' groups. Surely "ours" are sandshoes!!!!

Contributor's comments: As a child in Sydney in the 60s & 70s, we had sandshoes (white, for sport), sneakers (coloured, casual canvas footwear) and gym boots (which came up over the ankle).

Contributor's comments: We call them sneakers and when I moved to Canberra they called them "runners". In Whyalla at least "runners" were the coloured pants your wore under your netball skirt to cover your knickers!

Contributor's comments: I have always called them "runners", but one of my friends calls them "joggers", which I think of being more of an 80's term.
