urge

queue-jumper, peculiar to Sydney Boys High School in the 70s. Not sure whether still current. I suspect not: He urged in at the tuck shop - Sung in chorus by those in the queue against the perpetrator.

Contributor's comments: Also common in 1970s to Sydney Northern Beaches public high schools.

Contributor's comments: The term "urge" was in usage in the 1960's and was a term used at in North Sydney Olympic pool to mean queue jump. For example, when waiting in the line for the diving board you would ask a friend, "Can I have an urge?"

Contributor's comments: I was at Sydney Boys' High School between 1990 and 1996. To my knowledge this term was not in use at that time.

Contributor's comments: This expression was still floating around when I was at school in the late 1980's/early 1990's. A "front-urge" was when you let someone (usually a friend) queue-jump in front of you. A "back-urge" was when they jumped behind you in the queue. I went to Stella Maris (Manly, Sydney) and it was a fairly common expression and occurance, and the Seniors were always telling off Juniors for urging their friends at the Tuck-Shop queue. Then they did it themselves. Wasn't school fun!

Contributor's comments: Sydney Boys' may have been a relative latecomer to this word. When I started at North Sydney Boys' in 1965, it was current usage. The chant directed at any offender from the queue was always "urger". The term was also used in bus queues, and this may have contributed to its spread. I don't remember girls ever using it!
