pinny
an apron (short for the English pinafore) worn to protect clothes when cooking or housekeeping. Usually for young girls. Mothers wore an apron. A pinny always had a bib front where an apron might only be worn from the waist down: Young lady, make sure you put on your pinny before you help with the cooking.
Contributor's comments: We definitely used 'pinny' in Tasmania in the 1950s. It was part of the 'dress code' at infant's school.
