hock a loogie

to spit: I hocked a loogie

Contributor's comments: I heard this term once in my youth in the early 1970s', in Christchurch, New Zealand, when describing with some admiration, the efforts of a friend during an inevitable "anything you can do" competition.

Contributor's comments: Each year hundreds of primary schools participate in a joint concert at the Opera House. During intermission we used to have a competition to see who could hock the best loogie. This was done from the top stalls overlooking the area where the audience (usually everyone's parents) came out. You were so high up that you could really do some good ones, plus no-one ever knew where you were so you didn't get caught!
