someone who lives in town as opposed to someone who lives on a farm: Joe is a townie he doesn't know much about sheep.

Contributor's comments: I heard this term used in Forbes, NSW, when I lived there.

Contributor's comments: 20 years ago at Bathurst college students used townie to refer to the locals especially of the same age group.

Contributor's comments: My children say that when we lived in Adelaide (before 1997), kids in the suburbs referred to kids who "hung out" in the CBD as "townies". When we moved to Melbourne this expression was unknown amongst their Victorian friends.
