burn a reddie

To burn a dead red gum tree. This happened around the township of Balmoral in Western Victoria. When the pub was about to close on a Saturday night and there were no parties to got to, the local folk would "burn a reddie". They would set fire to a red gum tree on someone's farm. The tree had probably been ring-barked long ago. It was a great event to sit around an enormous fire and tell yarns and consume large quantities of alcohol: Anything on tonight? Nah. Let's burn a reddie. Yeh!
